Eddie MacDougal is of the Nimpkish Band of the Kwakwakawakw peoples from Alert Bay, British Columbia. His mother, Christine Scow is Kwicksutaineuk from Gilford Island. Eddie began carving later in his life due to the collapse of the fishing industry, where he had spent many years as a fisherman. In 2000 he began apprenticing under master carver Simon Dick of Alert Bay. Eddies work is marked by a beautiful blending of traditional Northwest Coastal styles with contemporary influences. His carvings are rooted in the stories and legends of the Kwakwakawakw Nation, which brings a historical richness to all of his work.
